Dr. Linda Barboa holds degrees in speech pathology and audiology, psychology, and early childhood education. She is an experienced Speech-Language Pathologist, with a background as a Special Education Director, Director of a Center for Autism, and University Professor. She has worked as an educator in the United States and Europe and has presented numerous programs to professionals across the country. Dr. Barboa is the author of several books about autism, including Stars in Her Eyes: Navigating the Maze of Childhood Autism, Steps: Forming a Disability Ministry, and Tic Toc Autism Clock: A Guide to Your 24/7 Parent Plan. Along with Jan Luck, she also authored the book Albert is My Friend, which has been translated into several languages. Dr. Barboa currently resides in Battlefield, Missouri with her husband, Mike.

The crucial needs of autistic school children

This is another much needed book in the “Albert” series. This book, written for teachers, school staff and autistic students, highlights some of the problems these unique children, such as Albert, are facing in many classrooms. Even now, there are teachers and school administrators who don’t understand the different style of teaching autistic children require in the educational arena in order to flourish.
School creates some confusing and stressful situations for Albert, many of which the teachers and other adults there might also find frustrating for themselves. Even though Albert is very quiet, he turns these situations over and over in his mind in an effort to understand why some of the activities at school create confusion and distress for him.
Many adults there don’t understand how different stimuli affect Albert’s behavior due to his aversions, fears, and need for organization. Thus, a “feel safe” environment doesn’t always exist for him at school.
Albert and so many other school children have a crucial need for the support, understanding and encouragement of all teachers and staff. Many families and friends of these special children all over the world, are crusading for the participation of every individual to become involved in this crucial area of educational care for our children. Everyone needs to join with them in this crusade.
Both of our authors are imminently qualified through both their professional and personal experiences to relate this much needed information about a very common brain disorder. Both truly understand how children may suffer and fail to learn in school without their unique needs being met.
All of us are acquainted with, or have family members with autism, and they are waiting for us to truly know and understand them. I very highly recommend this entire series to everyone!

ground breaking!!!

Early learning all to often is simply an after thought to most parents but this book highlights why learning for any child starts at home. During one section the author says: You (parent) are your child first teacher. That statement is truly powerful when you think about it because it makes parents just as responsible as teachers in the educational process for any child. Learning to read at one is not only obtainable but with everyone contributing it will give your child the head start they need before they ever step foot into a classroom. Great book, can't wait to read her next book!!!

Great Ideas for Teachers

All new and veteran teachers can benefit from a resource like this. It's hard to know where to take students for educational and interesting field trips, how to plan for a field trip once one has been secured, and/or how to use these trips as learning tools. Melber's book does all that and more.

Great historical fiction book for kids

I requested this book for review because my 9 year-old son was studying the founding of America at the same time this book was made available. I told him I had requested the book, and that it was my hopes that he would read it and type a review. This book is written for youngsters, so I thought it would be best for a youngster to read and review. What you are about to read are HIS words, not mine (I only helped with very minor editing for flow), so please be graceful when you read my 9 year-old's thought processes and sentence structure.

HIS REVIEW: There were two kids named Ambrose and John and their father gave them a letter to give to George Washington about the secret plan the Redcoats were going to play on them. When they were gone they had to get horses. They arrived at a barn to get some horses to ride but they had to do a trick to get the horses. They did their trick and they got 2 horses.

When they rode in the woods they got caught by some spies. Their father told them to trust no one and that’s what they did. They rode off into the distance.

When it was getting dark they went in to the woods and slept for the night. In the morning they saw someone took their horses. They went to the thief’s camp and they got their horses and rode away. When they rode away they got to George Washington’s house and got caught by his guards. The guards took them to Washington. When George Washington saw the kids he said to the guards to let them go and give them bread.

So the kids gave him the letter. He read the letter, which said the Redcoats were going to attack. He got right to work on preparing for the fight against the redcoats.

LIKES: I liked that it was very kid friendly and it was very entertaining to read. I learned that the Redcoats did not like George Washington. It was good that my class had already learned about George Washington, the Redcoats, and the Patriots.

DISLIKES: I liked the pictures, but they weren’t as nicely drawn as in some of the other books I’ve read.

RATING: I would give this book a 4 out of 5 stars.

A fun book that includes accurate information

I really liked that this is a war and patriotism book for kids. It is so hard to explain patriotism to the young. The American Revolution is so important to America's history and why we have the freedoms we have today. I loved that the author wrote a fun book and included accurate information. I also loved the part with General Washington and the picture of him was great too. The discussion questions really add to the overall book and help the reader comprehend what they have read. The authors also include a list of historical characters, a glossary and General George Washington's letters.

This book has everything a good instructional and educational title should have.

This book gets 5 stars and a top pick.

PATRIOTS, REDCOATS AND SPIES is a father and son writing team. This book, PATRIOTS, REDCOATS AND SPIES, is loosely based on a true story about their ancestor, Lamberton Clark.

I loved this book. It was awesome. It had a lot of suspense and it kept me on the edge of my seat. I didn’t want to put this book down.

Lamberton Clark is a great dad and pretty courageous. The twin boys were silly and acted like normal brothers, even with little fights. I was worried they’d get caught and they would be in trouble. I had to keep reading to find out what happens.

Recommended for anyone who likes historical adventure stories. For tweens, ages 8 – 12 years.

are a great find! As a parent of a struggling reader ...

These Steps to Literacy workbooks recently released in the United States by The Learning Staircase, are a great find! As a parent of a struggling reader and a literacy tutor for older students, I was excited to come across a set of workbooks that not only teaches phonics, but also includes exercises that help develop fluency and addresses underlying cognitive issues, such as visual discrimination and memory. I have used several different resources, but none is as all encompassing as Steps to Literacy. My students have found these workbooks to be challenging, yet rewarding, as skills are mastered, and I highly recommend them. The author is from New Zealand, so occasionally you may find a word used which we spell differently, but otherwise, there is no language difference. I am also looking forward to the release of her beginner reading workbooks, called First Steps, which will be great for those students who are just beginning to learn to read.

Here is a book written in kid-friendly language that gives you all the answers. Packed full of stories of everyday people whose lives have been changed, the “Case for Grace for Kids” shows that God’s love is for everyone…

My Review:
Don’t let this book fool you…it is not just for kids. I struggle with God’s grace in some way almost every day trying to explain to others what grace is. Although I basically read this to encourage my tween-age granddaughter to read it, I came away with a better understanding on how to explain how grace works. Mr. Strobel took interesting stories of people with grace at work and put them in simple everyday language, making it easy for kids (and adults) to understand. While reading these stories, my heart was touched by their hardships, but when they realized grace was at work in their lives, my heart rejoiced. All I can say is… please take the time to share this book with your children. It is truly a book of grace…and the plan of salvation.

Great book for kids!

As my children get bigger, I’m always on the lookout for books that will prompt discussion about our faith. Case For Grace For Kids by Lee Strobel is a great book about ordinary people whose lives have been changed by God’s love and grace. The book also begins by explaining what grace is. Each chapter ends with questions about grace and the book includes different verses from the Bible that refer to the subject of grace.

This book is recommended for children ages 8 to 12 years old. My 8 year old daughter could have easily read it on her own, but it is a book that prompts discussion and is perfect for reading one-on-one or in a small group.

We Love It

I love sitting down before bedtime with my son and reading together....he loves it too.

The two of us enjoyed all of the stories throughout the book. I love reading how things work out of others. It's very inspirational. There are so many stories in the book and it shows us what grace really is.

Great phonics workbook!

These Steps to Literacy workbooks recently released in the United States by The Learning Staircase, are a great find! As a parent of a struggling reader and a literacy tutor for older students, I was excited to come across a set of workbooks that not only teaches phonics, but also includes exercises that help develop fluency and addresses underlying cognitive issues, such as visual discrimination and memory. I have used several different resources, but none is as all encompassing as Steps to Literacy. My students have found these workbooks to be challenging, yet rewarding, as skills are mastered, and I highly recommend them. The author is from New Zealand, so occasionally you may find a word used which we spell differently, but otherwise, there is no language difference. I am also looking forward to the release of her beginner reading workbooks, called First Steps, which will be great for those students who are just beginning to learn to read.

I didn't know that the DASH diet was originally intended to help reduce hypertension. I am not looking to lose weight at all, but I am looking to reduce my body fat percentage and have a healthier lifestyle. I love food and this diet doesn't seem to be very restricting with food, perhaps just the amount - which I am working on. I love chicken and turkey the most, which is fortunately lean with high protein, so this diet should be a pretty smooth transition. It's nice that the author provides the basics of the DASH diet before introducing the many recipes. This allows the reader to understand before consuming. Good book for people wanting a healthier lifestyle.
