“When Jesus’ friends got to the tomb they could not believe their eyes or the words of the angel. Jesus was risen? What wonderful news!” it states in Zonderkidz’s book, "The First Easter Ever."

This small thirty-two page paperback targets preschool to early elementary school aged children who enjoy reading the Biblical account of Christ’s resurrection. Depictions of Jesus being beaten, bearing His cross, crucified, and dead may concern some young children. Due to some complicated wording, it would best be read out loud to beginner readers. This reviewer wishes all pronouns of God were capitalized for reverence.

With colorful quarter-to-full page illustrations by Dennis Jones, the easy-to-read font of black wording is usually set against a white background. Most of the designs of people and animals contain expressive facial features showing pain (Jesus being scourged), sadness (witnessing Jesus’s death), and happiness (Christ’s resurrection and ascension). The ending has one page dedicated to nine other children’s books by the artist.

Using the New International Version of the Holy Bible, this story covers the life of Jesus, starting as a boy who left home at thirty years of age to teach the world about God’s love. After being baptized and choosing twelve disciples, three years later He is captured, tortured, crucified, and buried. One morning, He rises from the dead, visits His friends, and returns to Heaven.

Although the book does not have the eternal plan of salvation explaining that Christ died on the cross for our sins, it is rare to see a children’s book address His crucifixion and include how He was beaten and nailed to a cross. Without displaying blood, the pictures have enough background content to convey the story, hopefully without upsetting a juvenile viewer.

As a story that has Easter in its title yet never uses the word inside the book, the engaging pictures help explain to a four to eight year old the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus and how He came to Earth to share God’s love. Even though it is in paperback format, it would make a lovely gift this holiday for any young reader.

My Review:

I have never read a book until now relating to a the Easter story of children at shared as much as The First Easter Ever. In the simple retelling of the Easter story it is a more expanded view and it offers this to the reader. Along with relatable illustrations as well as very simple wording you child will get the complete retelling of our Easter promise within the pages of this sweet children's book. My sons enjoyed the book and I enjoyed it because it went into a lot more detail than other books tend to do.

It starts the Easter story at the time of Jesus' baptism, it explains that He was baptized by his cousin John. Many children are not even aware that John the Baptist was his cousin. It goes on to describe the even that took place in the garden of Gethsemane while Jesus prayed. This book is a better retelling based on the facts that it lists that are usually not available in other children's books.

We love the book and the illustrations are perfect!

The Best Easter Ever!

"The angel moved the huge stone away from the entrance. Jesus was gone. He had risen from the dead. The angel sat and waited. He knew some of Jesusâ€™ friends were on their way to the tomb. He wanted to tell them the good news of Jesusâ€™ resurrection.

The First Easter Ever is an abbreviated version of the story of Jesus' life starting with his years of ministry and ending with His ascension into Heaven. The story is told in language that is engaging and that children can understand.

The illustrations are fantastic and are the primary reason why I chose this particular book. They tell a story and are full of action. I even enjoy looking at them as an adult. The drawing of the angel sitting on the stone that has been rolled away was great!

This is a beautiful book to read to your children at Easter. It seemed to be accurate majoring on God's love for humanity, and detailing the account of Jesus' death, burial, and resurrection. It even includes the 40 days that Jesus spent with his disciples after God raised Him from the dead.

The only thing I felt was missing was that a large portion of Jesus' ministry, healing and miracles, was not included in the book. That was a little disappointing for me. It focused on sharing about Jesus as teacher, raising disciples, and being fishers of men, which is very awesome. I would just liked to have seen some of the works of Jesus since that is how He demonstrated God's love for many.

One other thing to note is that when Jesus is baptized with the Holy Spirit, the book says "God appeared in the shape of a dove," which is not really accurate. Matthew 3:16 says, "After his baptism, as Jesus came up out of the water, the heavens were opened and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and settling on him." The Bible says "like a dove," not "as a dove." These are two different things. The phrase "like a dove" is actually a metaphor to describe the gentle way the Spirit of God descended.

I would recommend this book to families, churches, or anybody else who works with small children and would like a new resource for this Easter. This would be a great book to include in an Easter basked. My children are enjoying it, and I hope you can too!

Best Book out there for Helping a Child Learn to Read!

Jan Pierce has had a long career as a classroom teacher and reading specialist, as well as success as a published writer. Homegrown Readers, well-written, with parents in mind, is an incredible tool for raising up book lovers. And the world needs more book lovers! The principles outlined in this book will be a great help for encouraging children as they learn to read and for help in their development of healthy, solid reading skills. Is your child not a reader, struggling with reading skills. I had one like this and wish I had this book a few years ago. Homegrown Readers is an excellent tool for helping children who struggle with reading. It's a book that should be given to every new mother. This book will get your child on a successful reading path. I recommend it for parents, grandparents, homeschool moms, teachers and anyone who cares about helping children learn to love to read.

Reading helps for friends and family of young children

Excellent help from highly experienced reading teacher, who loves and understands little people.Not too academic, but loaded with orderly presentation of clear, practical, easy-to understand ideas for parents, grandparents, or anyone else influencing young children to become happy readers. Wish I had read it much earlier! Should be displayed prominently in all childrens' libraries, to catch attention of conscienscious but sometimes confused parents of young readers. Great gift for expectant parents! Great resource for preschool teachers and parents of preschoolers. Also for friends and teachers working with residents new to the USA and the complex English language. This great little book will help them start out right!

This book says it's for all readers, from very young to very old - I need help in getting my 6year old to read and this book just hasn't done it for me. He's far beyond some of the suggestions the book gives, which seems to be geared more toward toddlers.

About the Author
Gloria Konig Fiero was born and raised in New York City. She earned her Masters degree in Art History at the University of California, Berkeley, and her Ph.D. in Interdisciplinary Humanities at the Florida State University. She has taught Humanities, World History, and Art History for more than twenty-five years. She has written and lectured extensively on medieval and renaissance topics and on the arts of both East and West as they reflect the human condition. She currently divides her time between New Orleans, Louisiana, and New York City.

Best required text yet

This book utilizes so many resources and the author has a great ability to convey what she is trying to explain. I really reccomend buying this from Amazon too, I registered for the class late and got the book in time still, used but in great condition just as was conveyed in the description.

Textbook

This is an excellent volume. I found it to be well written and informative (as a textbook should be). The authors seem to have went to great pains to make the book very user friendly. I actually enjoyed just reading this book. Excellent descriptions, photos, and representations.

Great!

I purchased this for the second part of my Humanites class, it was in pretty much new condition, even though it was a used book. Although this book was older than I needed for the class, I found that I had no problem substituting this in for the proper book, all the chapters where still pretty much in conjunction with the newer edition (which is what I needed) but everything that is in the newer edition was in this older one, just jumbled around a bit, but it's nothing a few page flipping wont cure:)

She's small, sweet, and yellow with an orange beak

In The Very Hungry Duck we follow a feathered bird by the name of Little Duck. She's small, sweet, and yellow with an orange beak. The story starts with Little Duck having an empty stomach attached with a loud growl - she's really, very hungry. Her other animal buddies all find delicious foods to munch on - the cat, the rabbit, and the dog. The Little Duck is often met with dismay when they all eat the food first. Will she find some to fill her own growling tummy?

{My Thoughts:}

The Very Hungry Duck would make for a charming read during bedtime. Children ages two and up should be able to relate to this story with Little Duck and her friends. It's incredibly cute and Little Duck is a gentle character. Her emotions are easily felt from both her disappointments and her joys in the unending search for food.

The pictures presented in the book are all hand-drawn by the author Bernice Seward. There's a few sketches of fruit - the apple, strawberries, pear, and an orange - which is a great way to point out the fruit (and animals) to kids. I especially recommend this book (whether it's in Kindle or Paperback format) to small children who are huge animal/nature lovers.

I recommend Hungry, Hungry, Hungry

Bernice Seward’s first children’s book charms children (and their adults!) with the child-sized plot, the spot-on text, and adorable illustrations. Every child understands being hungry and having to wait so the parent can be assured their child will relate to the story easily.The text keeps their attention with its rhyming and rhythm as they wonder what will happen on the next page. Will Duck get to fill her hungry tummy?

Patience and humility must be taught, and Seward uses the duck’s journey to teach those values. This is a book that can grow with the child from the toddler who cuddles with a parent and later the early reader who can interact with the simple and fun text. I recommend Hungry, Hungry, Hungry and look forward to many more children’s books from Bernice Seward.

A Delightful Children's Book

Bernice Seward's love for life and children shines through this delightful children's book. The content is catchy and will surely appeal to a child's love for repetition. The illustrations are engaging in their simplicity. As a mom, grandma, and veteran homeschooler, my first thought was that the book would be a great resource for teaching young children the words for colors and fruits. It's a book a little one will want to hear over and over.

There's some great slow cooker recipes in this book but what made it good was that they are easy to follow and not confusing with tonnes of different ingredients and processes.
So many different type recipes you could try in here, enough to keep you busy for quite a while. All layed out well, easy to understand and a great book to have in your kitchen.

For the last time the imagined Marguerite Gautier had dragged her white face and camellias to the opera. After Alphonsine was buried in Montmartre, there took place the famous sale auction of her many possesions, furniture, hangings, dresses, objects d'art bibelots and bijoutterie. Literature is not a trusty reproduction of reality and like in most roman-a-clef the original yarn is more vivid and interesting than the fabricated version concocted by an author. This is no exception. Before Verdi's Violetta and Dumas young's Marguerite, there lived briefly and died a mislead soul of such unusual qualities, she was destined to cast a tall artistic shadow. "La dame aux camellias" are the novel (1848) and play (1852) by the son of Alexander Dumas, France's literary lion. The young Dumas, while growing, somewhat dissolute, was one of the many lovers of the fascinating courtesan who was Paris' arbiter of elegance, perennial in the gazettes, carrying camellias, always. An exquisitely enchanting maiden, who rented her love, thus making and spending millions. Duplessis was notorious for her extravagance, and, conveniently, the spell she cast on rich men. She was a fixture at theaters and gaming houses. A madly desired Marie Duplessis could never have imagined she would one day be the muse of Sarah Bernhardt Pola Negri, Eleonora Duse and Greta Garbo. 'La dame aux camellias" the novel and play both became success-de-scandale, both finding an instant and feverish acclaim. This old Romantic novel is based on the true story of Alphonsine Plessis, an abnormally pretty farmer, who abused by her brutal father, runs off to Paris and becomes a grisette. It's believed Plessis began selling his daughter at the age of twelve. There, in Paris, quite effortlessly, she becomes a ravishing courtesan, a swan, before dying of consumption at the age of 23. In the real biography Marie Duplessis (in her climb Alphonsine changed her name) is always juggling lovers (and debts) some, more fabulously wealthy than others. She also finds time for handsome and brilliant young men of fashion, despite their monetary limitation, and soon we learn she gives up Dumas for Frans Liszt (can you imagine the cinematic possibilities here?) Later, as the shadow of death grew near, Duplessis marries a faithful titled paramour, becoming a countess thus adding coronets to her plate. Now in the outs with Liszt (trust me, I can't go into everything but the life of the real heroine is very interesting)and while young Dumas (the original Armand Duval) travels with his father (in reality having perhaps forgotten Plessis, or Duplessis, Gautier or Valery, it's a bit confusing) the lady of the camellias dies alone of tuberculosis, in her dismantling, erstwhile courtly apartment. In this sad note ends the story of Alphonsine, also Verdi's opera, Garbo's movie and Dumas young's novel and play. The novel, a sometimes mistreated literary treasure that has seen print since the days of Louis Napoleon. Some dismiss it, some find it a bridge between the Romantics and the new realism of Flaubert. A curiously intimate young love account ending in a heart-crushing pathos. My regret is not seeing Duse or Eva LeGallienne in the role. See, I think this story would make a great modern movie. Unless you cry at dog-fights and are innately sentimental, don't pick up this book. If you like it, go on to read Abbe Provost's 'Manon Lescaut'. I could have never imagined I would one day get to grade 'La dame aux camellias', but here it is, you guessed it, I give it five stars.

19th Century Classic, Tragic Romance--very fast reading !!

This is the story of a beautiful, headstrong, and emotionally detached courtesan Marguerite Gautier who seems to live her life for the moment and her tragic love with Armand Duval. The main plot of the story is that their love can really never be allowed because of society's strict standards. Kind of in the themes of The Age of Innocence by Edith Wharton. This book was written by the famous Alexander Dumas's son, so the style of writing is very different. In the film version, Greta Garbo plays Marguerite in the movie, and plays her beautifully. This is one of the classics that everyone should really read, several classic novels and movies take their inspiration and ideas from Camille. The imagery is really pretty outstanding and several scenes stand out vividly in my memory even after several months. My favorite scenes are when Armand Duval and Marguerite meet for the first time in an operahouse,it's entertaining to see 19th Century social conventions-- and to peer into its darker underside. I think the novel is a little lacking in originality, but is made up by the beauty of the charactars and the depth of the love. It runs in the strain of Romeo and Juliette, very very quickly. The book can probably be read in a day or two without any effort. A classic.

Among The Better Selections In The Field Of 'Minor Classics'

Camille is that rarest of all literary creations: a readable, enjoyable classic. This novel tells a good story about the sometimes tragic and scandalous and sometimes joyous life and fortunes of one Marguerite Gautier, a Parisian courtesan, and her lover Armand. The pace in this book doesn't drag, isn't too long, and rises well to the exact conclusion a reader anticipates. This is a frank, even sexually bold sort of novel for its period, and demonstrates again that the nineteenth-century French were willing to delve into subject areas their English counterparts were not. The avenues the romantic entanglements in Camille take combine with other elements to give this tale a more modern feel than most novels of two centuries ago. It's not great literature (in fact it's barely above a well-written romance novel) but it's definitely not bad reading material, either. Three and a half stars is what I'd plant on this work.
