About the Author

Forrest W. Parkay is Professor of Educational Leadership and Higher Education at Washington State University. He was Professor of Educational Leadership at the University of Florida for eight years and at Texas State University for five years. Forrest received his B.A. and M.A. degrees in English education from the University of Illinois-Urbana. He earned his Ph.D. in education at the University of Chicago, and he is a graduate of Harvard University’s Management Development Program (MDP). For eight years, Forrest taught at DuSable High School on Chicago’s South Side, and he served as Chairman of DuSable’s English Department for four years.

 

Forrest is the author or co-author of more than 60 refereed journal articles and several books, including Curriculum Leadership: Readings for Developing Quality Educational Programs (Allyn & Bacon, 2010). His research has appeared in the field’s leading peer-reviewed journals, including Phi Delta Kappan, American Journal of Education, and Educational Administration Quarterly.

 

A former Fulbright Scholar at Kasetsart University’s Center for Research on Teaching and Teacher Education, in Thailand, Forrest has facilitated educational reform programs and conducted cross-national research in China, Thailand, Korea, Japan, Pakistan, India, and Singapore. He has been a Visiting Professor at Beijing Normal University and at Assumption University in Thailand.

 

His hobbies include classic cars, camping, kayaking, and photography. Forrest is the proud father of four daughters: Anna, Catherine, Rebecca and Anchitta.

I don't like that it comes as loose papers

I don't like that it comes as loose papers. The pages are ridiculously thin (when I use a highlighter or pen it goes through to the other side) and some of my pages aren't even printed well. There's sections of 2-3 pages every so often, where the ink is very faded and I could barely read the print. If they were trying to help students save money, they should have at least had the courtesy to slap a cheap paperback cover on it. I've had my fair share of textbooks at this point (I'm in graduate school) and I've spent about the same on brand new books with better quality overall than this book. The quality of this print and the loose-leaf nature REALLY bother me. The only plus side is that I could take out a chapter or two to take with me somewhere and not have to take the whole binder.

Easy to understand, good resource

Hated the class, but that's not the book's fault! It's actually a very interesting book. I enjoy the way it presents the information. I rented it, but wouldn't have regretted buying it for future reference. The authors do a great job in presenting the information in a interesting and applicable way, giving you many scenarios and relatable testimonies. I also really enjoyed Amazon's rental service. They make returning the book so easy- You just put it back in the package it came in, print out a label, and stick it in the mailbox!

It can fit in a three ring binder easily

I really like this book. Im majoring in Liberal Studies ( Teaching Credential ) and I needed this for my TEDU101 class. It came right on time! I also like the notes to 'mentor' and the thin pages , which makes it easy to bring in my binder also!

About the Author

Catlin Tucker is an accomplished Google Certified Teacher, international trainer, education consultant, speaker, and author. She currently teaches in Sonoma County where she was named Teacher of the Year in 2010. She has also taught online college-level writing courses, which led to her interest in blended learning and technology integration. Catlin’s first book Blended Learning in Grades 4-12 is a bestseller. In 2015, Corwin published her second book Creatively Teach the Common Core Literacy Standards with Technology. She authored a blended learning course for ASCD and writes a monthly column titled “Techy Teacher” for Educational Leadership. Catlin earned her BA in English from UCLA and her English credential and Masters in Education from UCSB. Must Read for All Teachers

As the educational technology administrator for a large district in northern California these past 3-years, I’ve been witness to the growing anxiety of many teachers and administrators around the technology demands of the Common Core Standards. Charged with helping them make this HUGE paradigm shift to using technology for teaching and learning I hear from teachers I work with that they get it, they need to use technology with their students and they constantly ask how. They want to know the best tools and practices to use from the myriad of choices today. In my search to find ways to address these needs, I was thrilled to find Catlin Tucker’s book this summer. Ms. Tucker breaks down how to use technology to teach Common Core Literacy Standards for ALL teachers. The book title states it’s for grades 6-12, but she outlines the literacy standards for all grades, and some of the examples she provides for high school could be modified and adapted for elementary classrooms. The empathic tone and passion will encourage and inspire even the most reluctant teacher. Ms. Tucker is a pioneer who personally found useful ways to use technology in her classroom which wasn't filled with devices or even close to 1:1. All teachers can respect her wisdom and ideas about technological use in the classroom, because she has developed most of them from the ground up in her own class. The book is a testament to that. She knows what teachers need in the classroom. She will coach you through the challenges with tips such as “use one tool at a time.” Teachers will become empowered to use digital tools for reading and writing because Ms. Tucker illustrates, in detail, as only a masterful practitioner can, how to implement use of digital tools because she has been successful using them with her own students.

All educators trying to implement the use of technology in their schools and classrooms will find “Creatively Teaching Common Core Literacy Standards with Technology” an incredibly helpful read. “Although this book is focused on how teachers can use technology to teach the Common Core Standards, I want to be clear that I do not believe technology alone will transform education.” Ms. Tucker writes early on in the book. “Excited, creative, eager-to-learn educators leveraging the newest tools available to actively engage students in learning will change education and blaze the path toward preparing our students for success in a rapidly changing global economy.” After reading this quote, I was hooked and knew I had found a very special resource, written by an innovative teacher calling us forward to pave the future road of learning together. I began to trust her knowledge, and maybe you will hopefully begin to trust that Ms. Tucker understands the challenges facing educators today while speaking passionately about the who, for her are the fundamental solution: Teachers.

I love this book

I love this book! Catlin Tucker writes in voice that talks me down off the ledge and helps me think clearly about the Common Core Literacy Standards. The first chapter is a reminder that we are making a shift from what students must know to what they should be able to do with their knowledge. Catlin outlines key points of emphasis in the Standards, and gives examples of how she has used technology in her own low-tech classroom to address these Standards. Though she teaches 9th and 10th grade, her classroom activities can easily be modified for middle school classrooms. Numerous technology tools and apps are written about in detail, with step-by-step directions for just about everything Google. Creatively Teach the Common Core Literacy Standards with Technology is a resource every teacher from grade 6 and up should have.

I don't like going to PD without something tangible or useful to ...

I got this book after joining in on an online PD hosted by the author. In the 45 minute PD I learned things I could use in the classroom the very next day. As a 4th year teacher, this is something I find very helpful. I don't like going to PD without something tangible or useful to implement tomorrow. I knew that when I got the book, I'd feel that very same inspiration. With tips for BOYD classroom teachers, 1-to-1 program schools, and everything in between, Tucker makes bringing tech into the classroom easy AND useful. I love using tech in the classroom and this book gives me easy ideas into how to do it with integrity. The book also ends each chapter with an online link so that you can get Tucker's formats, tips, and links to use in your own classroom. I recommend this book to everyone in every content.

Eric W. Hickey teaches criminal psychology at California State University, Fresno. Textbooks can be so droll and dry, this one has has the practical presented but at the same time integrates case studies throughout that correlate to the topic. Said case studies are well related to the chapter topics and having them sprinkled throughout the book is pleasant. Doctor Hickey's past experience makes this a textbook written by someone who has had practical application of the subject matter. I would probably find this book to be interesting without having it related to a class.

John Dewey (1859-1952) was an American philosopher, psychologist, and educational reformer whose ideas have been influential in education and social reform. Dewey, along with Charles Sanders Peirce and William James, is recognized as one of the founders of the philosophy of pragmatism and of functional psychology. He was a major representative of the progressive and progressive populist[2] philosophies of schooling during the first half of the 20th century in the USA.[3] Although Dewey is known best for his publications concerning education, he also wrote about many other topics, including experience, nature, art, logic, inquiry, democracy, and ethics. In his advocacy of democracy, Dewey considered two fundamental elements-schools and civil society-as being major topics needing attention and reconstruction to encourage experimental intelligence and plurality. Dewey asserted that complete democracy was to be obtained not just by extending voting rights but also by ensuring that there exists a fully-formed public opinion, accomplished by effective communication among citizens, experts, and politicians, with the latter being accountable for the policies they adopt.

If you want to *learn* how to think better, read this book!

Dewey's "How We Think" is the first book of his I have read. What a joy! I am in the "thick" of my doctoral dissertation, and am struggling to present and unfold my research work in a way that is clear to my audience (in this case, the members of my dissertation committee). Dewey's analysis of thought has helped me to consider important elements of thinking (and writing) such as: (1) the iterative "ebb and flow" between inductive and deductive thinking; (2) what is necessary to train my own mind to think "better"; etc.

Following my reading of "How We Think," I am now reading Dewey's "The Quest for Certainty" and "Knowing and the Known."

Reading "How We Think" is not difficult; however, it does require one to pay attention to what Dewey is saying to his reader audience. Now that I've read through it once, I will likely read through it again (fairly soon), as I work to tighten up my Ph.D. dissertation.

In conclusion, whether you are a student, teacher, or just plain interested in analyzing the world around you, then reading this book is very worthwhile.

Basic ideas to develop your thinking skills

It is very good to see this book appearing in new editions. This is a classic book about thinking. Dewey studies thought from the psychological and philosophical points of view and derives practical ideas for education.

Reading this book, I was surprised to see the applicability of its contents to my main activity field, which is business management. Today's main effort in business research is toward innovation and learning. Thus, thinking skill is probably the most important resource of any organization.

Dewey's view of thinking is surprisingly consistent and as fresh as any of the new management theories. Just to mention one aspect, he warns about the confusion of mental analysis (looking for the general aspects of an object) with physical analysis (dissection into parts), which leads to study living objects as if they were dead. This is the essence of systems thinking, which is so fashionable today!

The ideas Dewey presents about education are very useful for today's business environment. Business leaders, consultants and scholars should look carefully at his advices! His study of work and play is a great lesson of wisdom.

I would strongly recommend this book to anyone seriosly aiming at world class business performance.

This is a Bootleg Edition

This is not the same edition as the one that can be viewed on this page. There is a disclaimer in the front of the book that states that the so-called publisher "recreated this book from the original using Optical Character Recognition software..." Their software was defective. The results are unreadable gibberish. Information from the library they stole it from is integrated into the main body of text on the last page.

I am returning this to Amazon and looking for a legitimate copy of How We Think.

This book have great recipes!

This is a really great recipe book, with lots of yummy and easy smoothie recipes. There are clearly designed sections formulated for specific health goals with spectacular recipes clearly explained in each. Breeanne Hill included recipes for weight loss, aging, problem skin and heart concerns. Several of the smoothies are ideas I would never have thought of on my own as they use ingredients I would often have avoided due lack of familiarity. Many of the recipes are easily used as a base structure for personalization to bend them more to an individual's flavor profile. It just didn't just have sweet smoothies, though. There were also savory recipes, too. This was made specifically for a nutribullet system, but these would work in all blenders. The book looks great and is well formatted. It was easy to find the recipes that interested me the most.

I love smoothies but getting tired of same smoothies everyday

Nutribullet recipes on loosing weights have never came up on my mind. I love smoothies but getting tired of same smoothies everyday. I am glad to have read this books that makes me have a better option on my daily smoothie diet. I will now consume different smoothie for seven days without feeling bored.

I downloaded this book out of curiosity. I was wondering what a Nutribullet is. This book explains well what Nutribullet is and how it can help an individual to be the healthiest he/she can be. Nutribullet is a special machine that can extract nutrients from the food we eat. With the Nutribullet one can consume all the nutrients found in fruits and vegetables. A smoothie made from the Nutribullet can give you all the nourishment you need to be healthy, alert and full of energy. I would definitely want to try the recipes presented in this book and discover for myself the many health benefits one can get from getting all the nutrients from fruits and vegetables.

How Many Planets In Our Solar System

One of the weakest areas in our children's education is in the area of science. We are not on par with the rest of the world. It is important that parents and educators talk about science in our children's everyday life.

The author, Christine Alexandria, is a technology and engineering teacher in grades kindergarten through the senior year in high school. She understands we need to begin with science education at a very young age. This book is a wonderful beginning. We have eight planets and the sun. Traveling through space, we are introduced to each planet, asteroids and other inter-planetary objects. This will excite the children, and open their world to space.

Parents/teachers will enjoy reading this book to their children. Children will have so many questions. They will learn how to identify the planets by their color and size. They may also be astounded to learn that earth is one one the planets. The illustrations are bright, vivid and colorful, just out of this world, some of the best I have seen. They will grab the attention of every child and their adult. The story is told in rhyme which is one of my favorite methods of reading a book. Children also love the lilt of the words. Lessons learned is an important way for children to learn, and this book is a great example. Note: a complimentary copy if this book was provided to read and review.

~~Planets plus More for ages 2 - 5~~

The author states this book is written for ages 2 - 5. I love the fact that it rhymes which the little ones always enjoy. The drawings are bright and colorful and a rocket ship propels the readers towards space. And, their journey starts with the planet closest to Earth, the Sun.

I like the fact that in addition to enabling the younger ones the opportunity to learn the names of the planets, the author has also included fun facts about each one. For example, Jupiter is 11 times larger than Earth. Well, I guess I learned something new or perhaps I had forgotten this! How exciting to be on a rocket ship heading though space and seeing the planets out of the space craft.

A most interesting 'Trip Through Space' for me and most highly recommended. The book is also educational (which I love) and entertaining (another plus).

Children will feel at home in our solar system, and make friends with the planets!

Imagination and simplicity -- that's the draw for young minds in this book. Young readers tune in more easily to inanimate objects made a bit human -- and the sun and planets have wide smiles and googly eyes just for them! It's a winning combination.

All right -- can you name all the planets in order, starting from smiling Sun? After a few reads, your listeners will know them quite well. The rhymes help too. They are quite creative at times: "...Venus -- has seen us... lots of water -- son and daughter ... raging storm -- extremely warm ... my atmosphere -- gas planet here!" And more. But not only planets -- what else is in our solar system? Asteroid belts -- and YOU! "You live on planet Earth, silly."

This book makes children feel right at home in this vast solar system, and all the planets are friends.

When Poland saved Western civilization

Countries have a long history of ingratitude towards those who save them from peril. This book, in fictional form, was the first part of a planned trilogy detailing how the Polish army under King Jan Sobieski rescued the Western world from the encroachment of the Turks, by relieving the siege of Vienna in 1683. Without that victory, our entire history would probably have changed. What thanks did Poland receive for this tremendous accomplishment? It was dismembered by the very countries it had saved!
Sienkiewicz was a fine writer, unfortunately nearly unknown in these times. This is a robust work, but there is a dominant theme of patriotism infusing his characters. Rarely is love of country shown so clearly as in this work. It is also a love story, and a well-told one at that. The book has Sienkiewicz's usual elements: star-crossed lovers, strudy and loyal heroes, hissable villans, and characters who offer welcome comic relief. The writing is a bit old fashioned at times, but the patriotic feeling with which it was written practically leaps off the page at you. This book is much shorter than Sienkiewicz's other works that I have read, but its brevity does not diminish its impact.

I wish the trilogy had been written!

First of all, as much as I love this book, I'd suggest that the first Henryk Sienkiewicz book a person should read be either Quo Vadis or With Fire and Sword. They are long but worth it. This book - incredible as it is - is almost just a fragment compared with the giant scale and spirit of his other books that I've read. Even so, it is head and shoulders above most literature in so many ways.
You really get a sense of the times from Sienkiewicz, and this book is no exception. The descriptions of the armies and the countryside and the people in them establish a very concrete setting. Even so, Sienkiewicz infuses everything in the book with thematic relevance, but it is all done so very subtly that only gradually does the reader cumulatively percieve what the author wants him to understand. This must have been very difficult to accomplish, but he makes it seem effortless.
All the characterizations are centered on ideals and you come to know the people in the story through what they stand for and do. It hardly matters what any character's goal is. What's important here is the idealism and purity - or lack thereof - with which they pursue those goals. The heroes are extremely idealized, and the villians are predatory and evil. The "damsel in distress" is not typecast as a ditz. She is a full participant in the action - almost the main character - and her nobility is played off to great advantage against the trials she goes through. It's hard to resist such larger than life portrayals. Plus, the action is fast paced and always interesting.
Admitedly, this novel was the first of a planned trilogy that Sienkiewicz never completed and it shows a little. On the Field of Glory stands on its own, but it is still just a first act. Jacek's character is probably developed more fully in what would have been book two. In On the Field of Glory, we see powerful, passionate people who are being swept up into a greater conflict, but we do not get to see that greater conflict.
An excellent book that stands on its own, but it's a great loss to world literature that Sienkiewicz couldn't complete the trilogy!

Linguistic Glory

This book is written beautifully and patriotically, you find yourself wanting to postpone evrything around you so can immerse you totally in the book

a well written novel by the master story teller sienkiewicz

definatly a keeper you will read it again
