This was a wonderful story. I read it to my granddaughters and it truly kept their interest. It was fun to read and the ending was not what I expected, which is not typical of a children's book! I am looking forward to the next one!

Not a bad DIY book on MOOCs

A helpful book to get the most out of any experience with MOOCs, no matter how many courses you already have under your belt. It gives a clear overview of what to look for in a MOOC and where to turn to get it, it explains how to do the coursers to still keep the time managmenet under control and not get overwhealmed when participating in multiple courses all at once. And I thought it offers some insights into how to find and take advantage of the numerous benefits MOOCs can offer us, not just the learning aspect. I liked it :)
It can, however, get a bit confusing at times or repetitive.

About the Author
He is best known for keynoting and presenting workshops on retaining, educating and graduating first generation students from book-poor homes. With a compelling personal journey from dropping out of school to earning two graduate degrees from Harvard, he motivates and inspires willing learners. His message urges educators, students, parents, community leaders and youth development professionals in public and private institutions of learning across the country to help the next generation succeed by staying in school, becoming educated and graduating. His children and grandchildren are products of the Chicago Public Schools. Having worked at the US Department of Education and as a Professor of Sociology at Northeastern Illinois University in Chicago for 25 years, Dr. Betances is widely recognized for his advocacy of First Generation Students. He and his wife, Dr. Laura M. Torres Souder, have provided professional leadership and staff development training to over 1,112 public and private schools at home and abroad. They continue to provide diversity training and advocate for authentic literacy throughout the U.S., Puerto Rico, Guam and Micronesia.

A review of literature relating to character and leadership education reveals scant research focused on boys within secondary school contexts. Despite this, different models, primarily focused on leadership education, have emerged within several Australian independent boys’ schools. The philosophical nature of these programs, based on notions of holistic education appear articulated from an adult perspective, with scant regard for the views and voices of boys.
From an interpretive perspective of qualitative research, this ethnographic inquiry, with the researcher as participant observer, was conducted over the course of one academic year in an independent boys’ school. An ethnographic lens was employed to provide an intensive ‘insider’ snapshot of the context of the research site, where pedagogy and programs are promoted as centred on character and leadership education for boys. Adopting a theoretical perspective, consistent with symbolic interactionism, multiple qualitative methods of data collection were used to explore perceptions of leadership of boys aged 13-15 years old. The study sought to highlight and evaluate the extent to which the theory of educators aligned with the perceptions of boys.
The overarching question which guided this research was ‘How does an independent boys’ school provide character and leadership education for adolescent students?’ Further questions which focused the study were:
1.How does the culture and ethos of an independent boy’s school shape character and leadership education?
2.What perceptions of leadership exist amongst boys’ at the selected site?
3.To what extent does the educational philosophy of the school and the perceptions of boys align regarding leadership?
Findings from the study allowed for the creation of models of character and leadership education, emphasising a student-centred view of leadership. The specific context of the school was critical to the creation of models drawing upon the cultural, spiritual, educational and physical dimensions of the school. The study To grow leaders meant to listen to the voices of the students within the context of their learning community. This emphasis on boys’ voice revealed a variety of perceptions of leadership, reflecting a perspective that leadership was a process containing a range of elements to include leadership traits, behaviours, relationships, roles and service. Further, the value for educational leaders in articulating and promoting character and leadership education to align with school culture, ethos and mission was highlighted.
The conclusions drawn from this study have implications for educators seeking to design and develop relevant character and leadership education programs as an essential component of a holistic education for boys.

With clarity and insight Drago-Severson and Blum-DeStefano describe their rousing view of feedback through the lens of Constructive-Developmental Theory. Challenges in providing and receiving feedback are recognized, reframed, and addressed with a promising approach that should allow us to promote growth broadly. Tables delineate key characteristics, distinctions, and recommendations. Prompts at the end of each chapter promote reflection and support application. Tell Me So I Can Hear You is a key reference for all educators, all leaders, all of us as we strive to grow and to support the growth of others.

Powerful, Readable and Useful!

What I most enjoy about Tell Me So I Can Hear You is how the authors so practically linked the work of educational leaders, particularly principals, with developmental theory. They offer clear and accessible explanations of developmental theory and both how and why it matters for leadership development in the giving and receiving of feedback. Their charts are understandable, with explanations and suggestions that can be put to use immediately. The guidance for the giving and receiving of feedback makes so much sense. I am recommending this book to faculty, superintendents, teachers and students alike. It is one of the more helpful resources I've come across in some time. Reading this book and then putting its suggestions to use can happen almost immediately, and in the busy world of educators, that is priceless.

Must have for anyone who has to deliver or receive feedback!

As a vice principal and a former literacy coach giving feedback to grow educators is a critical part of my job. However, it only works if people "hear" the feedback that I'm giving them. Delivering feedback in a way that is helpful and productive and differentiating it for different "types" of people was a skill I was struggling to work on for years, and this book is a guide in improving my ability to both give and receive feedback! Drago-Severson takes the theoretical Constructivist Theory and makes it practical and applicable regardless of your experience or knowledge with it. It is written in very practitioner friendly language, with applicable concepts and practical take aways that can be implemented immediately. My favorite take away is the chart that can be used immediately to help recipients and givers of feedback better understand and support one another!

It is a reminiscence of Oscar parties over the last two decades. Fun food and the opulence of the Oscars make for a delicious combination in a book. .

Deliciously clever!

Annette has put together a thoughtful cookbook with some wonderful recipes and the stories behind them. Nothing too 'out there' except for the concepts. These are recipes I have the courage to make. And the book also shows how to throw a party. You have to have some vegetables, some appetizers, a main event, and a dessert. And the star of the whole thing is the woman whose next Oscar party we all want to attend!

The Charged Classroom crackles with dialogue and debate

This new book by Judy Pace is a winner. Using thoughtful vignettes and careful qualitative data from three unique classrooms, Pace paints a picture of classrooms brimming with life and possibilities for democratic learning. I enjoyed the image of the charged classroom - crackling with dialogue and debate. Pace shows us the potential for schools to create the conditions that allow the spark of a charged conversation to be harnesses in the service of a stronger, richer democratic life.

Even though I am an educator with over 30 years of experience, reading this book was illuminating. Dr. Pace dissects, explains and then, using case studies, offers solid information on how to transform your classroom into a more democratic and effective learning environment of all students.
