About the Author

WALTER H. GMELCH joined the faculty of the Department of Leadership Studies at the University of San Francisco after having served as the dean of the School of Education for nine years. He is director of the National Center for the Study of Academic Leadership and serves on the editorial board of several journals including The Department Chair, International Journal of Leadership and Change, Academic Leadership, and the International Leadership Journal. Gmelch has also served as dean of the College of Education at Iowa State University and interim dean of the College of Education, professor, and chair at Washington State University.

JEFFREY L. BULLER is dean of the Harriet L. Wilkes Honors College at Florida Atlantic University. Previously he held leadership positions at Loras College, Georgia Southern University, and Mary Baldwin College. As a senior partner in ATLAS (Academic Training, Leadership, and Assessment Services), he is currently active as a consultant to many colleges, universities, and university systems, such as the Ministry of Higher Education in Saudi Arabia, where he guides them in developing academic leadership capacity. He is the author of Positive Academic Leadership, The Essential Academic Dean, The Essential Department Chair, and many other titles from Jossey-Bass.

Useful for anyone in academia

My doctorate is in educational leadership (although my specialization is in curriculum development and instruction), so anything on educational leadership is going to peak my interest. Jossey Bass publishing does put out some of the best materials on education, so I had a feeling this book would be valuable. As Thomas said in his review (Dean and professor at the University of North Texas), the strength of the book lies in its "thoroughness" and "documentation" of the recommendations for building academic leadership capacity. While one tends to think of those in administration as being the leadership, the book indicates and talks a bit about how anyone can be a leader. I think that is the value of this book is that the situation can dictate who will be a leader. The book talks about much of what I learned about in graduate school including change theory, reflection, systems approach,inclusion, and skills development. There is also a nice resource guide in the appendix as well as several diagrams and charts that help to summarize key points. I think this is an excellent resource for anyone in academia as all of us (at some point in time) are in leadership positions in some aspect of our careers. Highly recommended.

Accessible, practical guide for getting your ledership development program going

This is a very practical guide to creating academic leadership.

The book has some enduring and widely applicable leadership principles such as accountability, knowledge, and communication.

The focus though is on leadership in academics. It has some great examples by position from deans to department chairs to administrative assistants.

Each chapter is chalked full of examples and ends with a quick summary.

Many of the chapters have checklists, and all of the points are well cited with a goldmine of references for clarification and further study.

The book says that academic leadership is the most neglected area in the field, and this book is a great, practical first step.

Applicable to anyone making the transition from IC to large project leadership

As someone with both an academic (Ph.D. in Computer Science) and business background (Microsoft and Mozilla), I found the lessons in this book interestingly appropriate to both. Clearly, the academic examples are the most important and relevant ones. While I was not a professor - much less a department chair! - this book did seem to address many of the dysfunctions I saw or heard about during my time in graduate school. However, as someone who has also experienced and seen many corporate instances of a similar transition from individual contributor to largely-untrained "leader/manager" I found this book useful there, too. In particular, it had many self-assessment guides for checking on your work and organizational support (e.g., when rolling out a large change) that force you to actually figure out whether you have the buy-in you will need to be successful. Lack of buy-in is a similar problem in a corporate environment, and many of the "academic" risk indicators translate directly to the corporate world as well, particularly for my experience with the computing field, where many of the individual contributors tend to think of themselves as tenured faculty...

A Great Tool!

As a martial arts instructor, I work with children that are everywhere on the autistic spectrum. I found this book to be a great tool for me and helped me to establish guidelines for working with various students as well as providing an explanation on the child's behavior and how to communicate with that child. The book is the rambling opinions of an amateur "Behavior Support Consultant".

-Content is disorganized and confusing.
-Poor grammar makes it difficult to read.
-Poor spelling/punctuation distracts from the message. (The author just points out that it was not proofread and tells the reader to "smile and get over it".)
- The author's 5-Star "review" of his own book is, at best, childish, and at worst, downright deceitful.

Soup for Breakfast?

While the recipes may be good, the title is very misleading. I don't know many people that would call multiple vegetables that need prep for a casserole an easy breakfast meal. I picked this book for breakfast recipes that are easy. While there are some recipes that are easy and what I would consider breakfast, soup is not one of them.

I suggest a different title that properly reflects the recipes.

A helpful book.

My friend has a child with ADHD (a single mom), and I can see how hard she tries to make everything okay and easy. One time, I took care of her child, it's only then when I realized that it's really hard and that is not a joke, and I am praying that if ever I will have my own child, I hope he/she won't have ADHD, but we cannot choose, right? Until I read this book, now I understand the "whys".

This book is very informative, from the beginning to the end. Parents who have an ADHD child (even those who doesn't have ADHD child) can learn a lot from this book. Very clear and easy to understand, you don't have to be a doctor or someone with medical background or whatever to understand this book.

To the author, thank you for sharing this book, it is and will be a very helpful book not just for parents with ADHD child, but for all reader who will read this.

About the Author
Frances Sizer, M.S., RD, FADA, is certified as a charter Fellow of the American Dietetic Association. She is also a founding member and vice president of Nutrition and Health Associates, a Florida-based information and resource center that maintains an online bibliographic database tracking system that conducts research in more than 1,000 topic areas of nutrition. In addition to the best-selling NUTRITION: CONCEPTS AND CONTROVERSIES, Sizer was a primary author of the first ever instructional and animated NUTRITION INTERACTIVE CD-ROM (Cengage Wadsworth). Her previous publications include NUTRITION CLINICS, a monograph series for health professionals, and the college text THE FITNESS TRIAD: MOTIVATION, TRAINING, AND NUTRITION. In addition to writing, enjoying her family, and schooling her horse in dressage, Sizer is also an active board member of ECHO, a local hunger and homelessness relief organization in her community. Sizer received her B.S. and M.S. in nutrition from Florida State University.

Nutrition not photography

The print on demand is a bit of a drag. Don't expect this product in a hurry. But with that I did expect the product to be good quality. Unfortunately I didn't get a chance to find out. The book arrived with the correct cover but wrong content. Not even related, the text was for a photography course. I will say that Facts101 was very willing to correct the situation and make it right. However after taking a good look through the photography content I really was unimpressed. It was mainly vocabulary list. I am not familiar with the original text but I can only assume a book like that might have a few diagrams or charts of value. Returning this for a refund.

A great resource for the beginner

An extremely useful resource for those starting out in medical writing, or even those considering medical writing. The narrator is very down-to-earth, and she lists a lot of different additional resources in the book in addition to her won experience. Probably the most useful part for me is that it gives you a good idea of what your day-to-day life would be as a medical writer, which in turn helps my thought processes when considering this as a career. Really worth the price. I purchased the Kindle version, and there were no problems although some of the tables/figures were a little small and hard to read.

I'm so glad I did it

This book is worth its weight in gold for a new medical writer. I've actually been making a living as a medical writer for a while, so I was hesitant to buy it. I'm so glad I did it. It is packed with tips and practical information--the kind of stuff essential to your success as a writer. Wondering how much to charge? What software is helpful? How to approach new clients? How to deal with difficult clients? It's all in here. I can't say enough nice things about this book, and it's a real steal at this price!

Dr. Nichols does a great job in putting together this book. I am a Chiropractic Physician just finishing a Master's in Public Health (Epidemiology/Biostatistics) and at somewhat of a crossroads trying to decide where to go vocationally. If you want to learn more about freelance medical writing and if this field is for you, get the book. If you know you want to be a medical writer the book can help with all the aspects of running the business. She also gives many recommendations for additional books and organizations for further information.

About the Author
Celi Trépanier has a vast and varied background in education. She received her B.S. from Loyola University in New Orleans and her M.Ed. from the University of Louisiana, Lafayette, then taught in Louisiana, Ontario. and Alabama, in public schools, private schools, and homeschool co-ops. Celi became a passionate advocate for gifted children after tiring of her family’s painful battles with traditional schools and the misunderstanding and neglect of gifted students. Through adversity came her passion, her strength, and her voice. She advocates for the educational, emotional, and social needs of all gifted children, and her dream is for schools and society to one day understand the truths about giftedness in children. Her writing centers on her advocacy for gifted children and her own journey with her three gifted sons. Highly recommended for all parents of gifted children.

Homeschooling, once reserved for faith-based families and outliers, is now gaining favor among parents of gifted children who are frustrated with schools who ignore their child’s needs or flat-out deny necessary services for them. Parents are learning that every moment a child sits in a classroom bored is time lost and it will never be recovered.
There is just something sweet when you hear a teacher admit that schools may not serve all students well. But you already knew that as the parent of a gifted child. Celi Trépanier provides a unique perspective as a public school teacher coming to terms with a system she whole-heartedly supported until she had to deal with it as a parent.
This book from Gifted Homeschoolers Forum may be about homeschooling, but it’s heavy on ‘gifted’ information. It offers valuable advice on how to advocate for your gifted child drawing on the author’s personal experience and insights gained from other educators in the field. Many readers will feel an affinity with her journey from public school to homeschool.
I highly recommend Educating Your Gifted Child: How One Public School Teacher Embraced Homeschooling for all parents of gifted children. If you are unhappy with your child’s schooling options, you will want to read this book.

Before we get into the nitty gritty actual review stuff, let me get some administrative-style details out of the way:

-I am actually a large fan of Celi's, and everything I've read of hers prior to this book I've absolutely adored.
-I was given a copy of this book for review purposes. However, all opinions remain my own. It takes more than free books to buy me off, I promise.
-I hate lists with only two items on them, so I've put in a number three as a personality quirk. If you really want a number three, though, you can take a reiteration of my admiration of Celi as an author and blogger instead.

I'm going to open this by saying that yet again, GHF has knocked it out of the park. They've chosen a wonderful author and turned her loose on spectacular subject matter. Now, let's get into why I say that.

Educating Your Gifted Child: How One Public School Teacher Embraced Homeschooling is not a how-to book. It's not a laugh a minute. It's not even a "what do I DO?!?" book. It's something still different. Much like an earlier release, it's a chat with a friend - but rather than a commiseration and sharing of war stories over a glass of wine, this is a sit down for lunch over a cuppa where you're able to vent your frustrations, and know that someone gets it. And, as anyone involved in gifted advocacy knows, someone who really gets it is invaluable.

This book didn't have a whole lot in the way of new information for me. Not many books do anymore, and I'm actually kind of glad for that - it means I have some idea what I'm talking about. But what this book has in place of that information dump is a very well documented retelling of what the public school system (in two countries, no less!) is like for gifted children. Now, I knew what it was like in the 80s and 90s, being in the system myself. But nowadays? I'm out of practice. However, I'm able to see from what Celi has written that not only has much remained unchanged, but things that needed change did get it... just in the wrong direction.

There are bits of new information here for me, namely on things like the school-to-prison pipeline for gifted, and the dropout rates. However, the big glaring DIRE NEED for me at this point? I need to purchase about 30 copies of this book and hand them out to our family and friends. It's clear, concise, and not me. This isn't to say that the people around me don't listen to me, but often having the words in print, and corroborated by others make a difference. And given that a lot of the loudest people I know who don't care for how we are educating our child came out of American public schools at the end of the Space Race? This is actually the perfect book to give them. It quite clearly delineates what has changed in terms of educational programming since that time, how gifted children are often perceived by their teachers and peers, and how federal mandates essentially provoke that reaction.

If you are remotely interested in homeschooling, if you feel in your gut that maybe something in the public school system isn't working for you, your child, or both, this is absolutely a book for you. If you are already homeschooling, but are constantly bombarded by people who insist you're hurting your child by not putting him/her into public school, this is a book for you. If you're interested in an insider's take on the public school system, how it's failing our children, and how despite every effort to increase our global educational standing, the US continues to slip farther and farther from the top, this is a great place to start.

I love this book

I love this book! Insightful and intelligent it has practical, real life advice. I have never been a fan of homeschooling but after reading about the author's life experiences, described with humor and commonsense, I realize that it is a truly viable option for educating our gifted children. This is a definite "must read" for any parent of a gifted child.
