About the Author
WALTER H. GMELCH joined the faculty of the Department of Leadership Studies at the University of San Francisco after having served as the dean of the School of Education for nine years. He is director of the National Center for the Study of Academic Leadership and serves on the editorial board of several journals including The Department Chair, International Journal of Leadership and Change, Academic Leadership, and the International Leadership Journal. Gmelch has also served as dean of the College of Education at Iowa State University and interim dean of the College of Education, professor, and chair at Washington State University.
JEFFREY L. BULLER is dean of the Harriet L. Wilkes Honors College at Florida Atlantic University. Previously he held leadership positions at Loras College, Georgia Southern University, and Mary Baldwin College. As a senior partner in ATLAS (Academic Training, Leadership, and Assessment Services), he is currently active as a consultant to many colleges, universities, and university systems, such as the Ministry of Higher Education in Saudi Arabia, where he guides them in developing academic leadership capacity. He is the author of Positive Academic Leadership, The Essential Academic Dean, The Essential Department Chair, and many other titles from Jossey-Bass.

Useful for anyone in academia

My doctorate is in educational leadership (although my specialization is in curriculum development and instruction), so anything on educational leadership is going to peak my interest. Jossey Bass publishing does put out some of the best materials on education, so I had a feeling this book would be valuable. As Thomas said in his review (Dean and professor at the University of North Texas), the strength of the book lies in its "thoroughness" and "documentation" of the recommendations for building academic leadership capacity. While one tends to think of those in administration as being the leadership, the book indicates and talks a bit about how anyone can be a leader. I think that is the value of this book is that the situation can dictate who will be a leader. The book talks about much of what I learned about in graduate school including change theory, reflection, systems approach,inclusion, and skills development. There is also a nice resource guide in the appendix as well as several diagrams and charts that help to summarize key points. I think this is an excellent resource for anyone in academia as all of us (at some point in time) are in leadership positions in some aspect of our careers. Highly recommended.

Accessible, practical guide for getting your ledership development program going

This is a very practical guide to creating academic leadership.
The book has some enduring and widely applicable leadership principles such as accountability, knowledge, and communication.
The focus though is on leadership in academics. It has some great examples by position from deans to department chairs to administrative assistants.
Each chapter is chalked full of examples and ends with a quick summary.
Many of the chapters have checklists, and all of the points are well cited with a goldmine of references for clarification and further study.
The book says that academic leadership is the most neglected area in the field, and this book is a great, practical first step.

Applicable to anyone making the transition from IC to large project leadership

As someone with both an academic (Ph.D. in Computer Science) and business background (Microsoft and Mozilla), I found the lessons in this book interestingly appropriate to both. Clearly, the academic examples are the most important and relevant ones. While I was not a professor - much less a department chair! - this book did seem to address many of the dysfunctions I saw or heard about during my time in graduate school. However, as someone who has also experienced and seen many corporate instances of a similar transition from individual contributor to largely-untrained "leader/manager" I found this book useful there, too. In particular, it had many self-assessment guides for checking on your work and organizational support (e.g., when rolling out a large change) that force you to actually figure out whether you have the buy-in you will need to be successful. Lack of buy-in is a similar problem in a corporate environment, and many of the "academic" risk indicators translate directly to the corporate world as well, particularly for my experience with the computing field, where many of the individual contributors tend to think of themselves as tenured faculty...
