Make it Mandatory!

Make it Mandatory!

Students in the Schools of Education should be required to read this book. While there are many ways to connect through the internet, all teachers will be inspired by Whittaker, Casas, and Zoul’s, “What Connected Teachers Do Differently”. Inspired not just about how technology brings teachers and schools together, how the book reinvigorates one’s love for teaching. Readers are inspired when authors tell them, “...to take pride in the fact that you do have unique talents and experiences, (that) others not only can, but will, learn from you.” (p.6) The book is full of tips and ways to effectively use social media tools. For example, a school might consider having more than one Twitter account. “Possibilities include an account for the principal, student club/activities, athletics, fine arts, and even parent/booster account(s).” (p. 31)

One of the best parts about the book is the end of the chapters. The authors have compiled three sections that bid interaction. The first section is called “Follow 5” and offers the reader five different examples of the concepts that the authors are describing. The examples are of teachers, administrators, and professionals modeling these best practices. Along with a brief description of how the model utilizes the concept, the authors give out the twitter handles for each of these modelers as a way for readers to directly connect.
The authors have added a second end-of-chapter resource in the “Find 5” section. This section shares and describes links to resources that are pertinent to a chapter’s content. For example, the first chapter, “Invest in P2LN” has the resource called “Twitter in 60 Seconds.” Since the chapter shares the importance of developing and expanding personal and professional learning networks using twitter, this resource is concise and informative. (I’m regretting having bought this book as a hard copy. The eBook has these as clickable links.)
As if these weren’t good enough resources, the end of each chapter also includes an action steps section called, “Take 5.” Whittaker, Casas, and Zoul offer five action steps to take which correlate to the chapter’s topic. This sections rounds out a robust grouping of resources (120 in all) that are inspirational and will motivate readers to get involved, take action, and be the transformation they want to see in education.

I am humbled and inspired by how much this book has opened my world. At every school, I have been the leader of technology in the classroom. What Connected Educators Do Differently has shown me just how much more there is out there to learn. I cannot emphasize enough how important this book is for all teachers, new and experienced. The book gets 5 out of 5 stars from me.

I happened to stumble across this book through amazon's recommendations, and it was a very pleasant surprise. It had an immediate impact on how I viewed the field. It provided examples that resulted in me being more involved on twitter, google communities, and various other personal learning networks. I've come across resources that I used in my instruction, and I likely would not have found if it had not been for this book.

The Go To Book for Any Educator Wanting to Get Connected

Todd Whitaker, Jeff Zoul and Jimmy Casas knock it out of the park with this one. Not only do they make a strong case for the importance of being connected and the impact doing so can have on you both personally and professionally, but they provide you all of the resources you need to build a strong professional learning network from day one! If you are new to social media and want a guidebook to why and how to get started, then get this book now! Follow their advice and you will quickly begin to notice a positive transformation in your own learning and start to understand the power of making a contribution to the global education community.

Even as more experienced users of social media, we walked away from this book with new ideas, new people to follow and learn from,and new blogs and websites that have propelled our learning forward. Each chapter wraps up with practical advice in the form of "Follow 5, Find 5, and Take 5" which EVERY educator will find valuable as they work to become connected educators committed to making a difference.

This is a must read book and one we will recommend to other educators time and time again. Well done!

About the Author

Award-winning author and educational leader, Alan Blankstein served for 25 years as President of the HOPE Foundation, which he founded and whose honorary chair is Nobel Prize winner Archbishop Desmond Tutu. A former “high-risk” youth, Alan began his career in education as a music teacher. He worked for Phi Delta Kappa, March of Dimes, and Solution Tree, which he founded in 1987 and directed for 12 years while launching Professional Learning Communities beginning in the late 1980s. He is the author of the best-selling book Failure Is Not an Option®: Six Principles That Guide Student Achievement in High-Performing Schools, which received the Book of the Year award from Learning Forward. Alan is Senior Editor, lead contributor, and/or author of 18 books, including Excellence Through Equity with Pedro Noguera, (In Press).  He also authored some 20 articles in leading education print including Education Week, Educational Leadership, The Principal, and Executive Educator. Alan has provided keynote presentations and workshops for virtually every major U.S. Ed Org, and throughout the UK, Africa, and the Middle East.  Alan has served on the Harvard International Principals Centers advisory board, and the Jewish Child Care Agency, where he once was a youth in residence.

 

 



Pedro Noguera is the Peter L. Agnew Professor of Education at New York University. He holds tenured faculty appointments in the departments of Teaching and Learning and Humanities and Social Sciences at the Steinhardt School of Culture, Education and Development and in the Department of Sociology at New York University. He is also the Executive Director of the Metropolitan Center for Urban Education and the co-Director of the Institute for the Study of Globalization and Education in Metropolitan Settings (IGEMS).

He is the author of The Imperatives of Power: Political Change and the Social Basis of Regime Support in Grenada (Peter Lang Publishers, 1997), City Schools and the American Dream (Teachers College Press 2003), Unfinished Business: Closing the Achievement Gap in Our Nation’s Schools (Josey Bass, 2006) City Kids, City Teachers with Bill Ayers and Greg Michie (New Press 2008), and his most recent book is The Trouble With Black Boys…and Other Reflections on Race, Equity and the Future of Public Education (Wiley and Sons, 2008). Noguera has also appeared as a regular commentator on educational issues on CNN, National Public Radio, and other national news outlets.

Jacqueline Kinney Johnson is a former tribal missionary to the Kuna Indians located on the Colombian border in Central America. The vision for The Princess Parable Series was born in these jungles. She is the wife of Pastor Ralph Johnson and the mother of two daughters and the grandmother of three princesses, Catherine, Alexandra Grace, and Megan Joy and four young knights, Zack, Payton, Maverick, and Christopher. She delights in stirring young hearts and imaginations with Godly character and the certainty of becoming a child of the King for eternity. Her passion is mentoring and equipping dedicated young women for life, marriage, motherhood, and beyond. She lives in a castle perched high on a hill above the Pacific Ocean in Southern California.



Omar Aranda studied Fine Arts in Buenos Aires, Argentina, where he was born. Many top publishers and companies worldwide have commissioned him for projects including story artwork, comics, and character design. He started his career as an artistic painter but now devotes all of his time to illustrations for children's products.

Princess Hope Sticker & Activity Book

The Princess sticker and activity books are really cute. I took them to church for my youngest daughter to do during service (to keep her quiet) and she worked through them both quickly. She was a bit frustrated that the stickers didn’t seem to go anywhere. She put a few out, but ended up using the rest to decorate paper.

In addition to stickers, the Princess Activity books include:

 word searchs
 color by number
 find the differences
 coloring/drawing
 codes to figure out messages
 matching
 mazes

Only sixteen pages, they were too short ad she was done with them long before the sermon ended. I think she was disappointed by that, too. I would like to see them longer, with more than one of each activity, and maybe pictures they can color and hav places for the stickers.

My daughter still told me to give it five stars because she enjoyed doing them. And she does recommend them for other little girls. A neat gift idea for your favorite 4 – 8 year old girl’s Easter basket.

Perfect Learning Tool for Your Little Princess

First if you have not yet introduced your “little princess” to this princess series, I highly encourage you to do so. It will delight your child and she is sure to want the whole series.

Each book has 16 pages of fun-filled puzzles, activities and reusable stickers that will delight your child from ages 4-8. They are a great fun way to learn, without them realizing they are learning.

Princess Hope’s book features her father, the king, and her special animal friend, Lily, who is a little lamb.

This is a perfect way to keep your little one occupied while at appointments of just for fun. These sticker/activity books would be a wonderful addition to your child’s Easter basket.

My daughter has these sticker books, all 5 of them, and she loves them! There are coloring pages, stickers, crossword puzzles and other activities that keep her engaged. I love that I don't have to worry about the content...they are wholesome and fun for her! We love these books!!

About the Author
Megan Meyerson graduated from Nebraska Wesleyan University with a K-12 Spanish Education degree. After spending a semester as a substitute teacher in the Lincoln Public Schools district, she accepted a Fulbright English Teaching Assistantship in Aracaju, Sergipe, Brasil. She spent 9 months teaching for Inglês Sem Fronteiras, a program at the Universidade Federal de Sergipe that prepares students for the exam necessary to study in the United States. Along with teaching classes at the University, Megan volunteered at Nossa Escola, a private elementary school, where she taught students whose ages ranged from 6-12 years old. Megan currently resides in Lincoln, Nebraska where she is a Spanish teacher at a local high school. Armen Kassabian is an English and French Teacher in New York City. He is studying for his Masters in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL) at Long Island University and in Bilingual Education at Hunter College. He graduated with a Bachelors in International Development and Social Change and Contemplative Practice in Education from Clark University. After subbing in the New York City Schools for three years, he accepted a position to work for the French Government in Martinique in 2012. He later accepted a position to work as a Fulbright English Teaching Assistant in 2014, for the American and Brazilian governments, working for English Without Borders program at the Federal University of Mato Grosso. He currently teaches for the New York City Board of Education.

Saving ESL teachers everywhere!

As any other ESL teacher can relate to, one of the biggest challenges is coming up with activities for class. Not only activities that are educational but also those that are dynamic and will keep the students engaged. This book was fantastic in that it it chock-full of activities that do both of those things. Armen and Megan did a fantastic job. If you're an ESL teacher, this book will add a TON of activities to your classroom arsenal.

Great Resource for Teaching English in Brazil

I love this book! As someone whose taught English in Brazil for a year and a half, I understand the importance of diversity in an English teacher's repertoire. This book gave me ideas for keeping both my classrooms and conversation groups interesting. Moreover, I loved the authors' incorporation of Brazilian street art in the book! As former Fulbright ETAs, their experience and engagement with Brazil really made the book unique. I highly recommend this book as both a teaching resource and a cultural resource for American teachers who are hoping to engage with Brazilian students.

This book presents a diverse collection of dynamic activities for the classroom for a wide range of levels and topics. It is easy to navigate and I especially like the section about drama and improv. I have used many activities in the classroom with success and turn to this book when I need new ideas. I highly recommend this book to English teachers as wonderful reference of creative, fun ideas that promote student-student interaction.

About the Author
Ray Launier completed his M.A. in Human Development from the University of Chicago and his Ph.D. in Psychology from the University of California, Berkeley. His career experiences have spanned the areas of basic research on emotions and stress, many areas of applied psychology, and teaching at both undergraduate and graduate levels. From 1996 to 2015, he has served as Professor of Psychology at Santa Barbara City College. His interest in and approach to cultivating emotional well being reflects his growing up years on a working farm in New Hampshire, his training and experience as a weather observer in the U.S. Air Force, and the influence of many University teachers, scientists, writers and students of wisdom. We need and should have our emotions; our emotions should not have us. The Shapiros have written an eye opening expose of the financial disaster that results when a couple divorce. Two cannot live as cheaply as one after divorce. The divorce ends a financial partnership as well as a romantic relationship. One household becomes two and expenses double while income often stays the same. Their book is primarily aimed at the spouse who never paid any attention to the bills and family finances. They provide basic information on budgeting, savings, investments and financial planning and give readers the information they need to ask the right questions of their own lawyers and financial managers. I'm a financial planner who bought the book to see if it would be helpful to divorcing clients. I found it to be an easy read and would recommend it to any couple who are considering divorce or in the middle of one. This is written for the layperson and not technical. When the author writes that marriage is about love and divorce is about money, he is right on track.

My only gripe is that since 2008 when this book was published A LOT has changed. I only take the advice with a grain of salt when it comes to agent contact and etiquette. Specifically attitudes about email and text have changed. K Callan needs an updated version pronto!

Good read for Parents of School Age Kids

Smart Parents, Successful Kids, by Suzanne Capek Tingley, is a clearly written guidebook for parents which assist them to effectively advocate for their children in the school setting. Tingley, a former teacher, principal and superintendent, and most importantly a parent, uses humor and realistic scenarios to demonstrate strategies which will help parents and their children reach successful solutions to academic, social and behavioral concerns. One of the valuable tips Tingley provides is a roadmap for whom to approach at the school based on the situation. For example, if the issue is classroom related, Tingley advises parents to approach the classroom teacher first and avoid the urge to start with the principal. She gives parents tips on how to start that conversation with authentic dialogues. At the same time, if the exchange with the teacher is unsatisfactory for both parent and child, she recommends an appropriate next step. Tingley’s practical approach to issues facing parents with school age children gives parents the confidence to reach outcomes which will ensure successful kids.

promote their child's best interests in the educational environment. The book engages the reader immediately with its humor and realistic scenarios. It is easy to insert oneself in the conversations that Tingley has woven into the various situations. The Chapter headings will also serve as a great reference and review after the first reading. Tingley encourages the parent not only to be an advocate for their child in the beginning grades, but to also "run the race and go the distance" K-12. The difference with this book is that Tingley gives great advice as to "HOW" to do this. ENJOY!

A great resource for parents!

This is a very informative book with good advice for parents/caregivers. It is well written with very nicely illustrated pictures and a sense of humor. It is a good resource for all parents navigating the educational system. As a parent of two adult children, dealing with the school system posed at times to be very frustrating. It would have been beneficial to have a resource like this.

Being that I've lived in Korea for almost 12 years, I totally related to this book. I found the stories to be very true about Korean culture and the activities gave me extra ideas to use in my ESL classroom. This was an excellent book!
