Assessment 3.0 is an essential read to make change in education

Eagerly I was waiting for my copy of Assessment 3.0: Throw Out Your Grade Book and Inspire Learning to arrive. Mark Barnes has been posting teasers for month and given my work with him with Teachers Throwing out Grades, I was desperate to see the final product.

And as per usual, he did not disappoint.

In this short book, Barnes outlines the problem with the current educational system and makes a suggestion for a simple solution: instead of trying to quantify that which is can't be realistically made into numbers and percentages without doing children an injustice, why don't we just get rid of grades.

Through his own narrative voice and research, Barnes walks the reader through his own evolution, outlining the challenges of the traditional system and the attitude keeping things as they are because they have been this way for so long.

Admittedly, this is not the reason to maintain the status quo.
Taking every argument a proponent for the current system might have like the need for GPAs or the use of simple tabulation for grades, Barnes provides reasons for why these things aren't necessary and hurt kids, quite convincingly I may add.

Each chapter sets the reader with intriguing information and then ends with questions to ponder our own barriers for making these kinds of change.

Although giving up grades is a simple solution, implementation isn't as easy. But Barnes does provide a framework for change. Since "grades lie," we need to do something different. Proposed in Barnes' earlier work Role Reversal "SE2R" - a formula for change is reintroduced here.

What is SE2R?

It's a conversation between teacher and student about learning:

S: summarize

E: explain

R: redirect

R: resubmit

I don't want to give too much away, but Barnes goes into depth with this process and explains how using it diminishes subjectivity when assessing students' work.

What a book like this also needs (and has) are some folks who are doing the work and have evidence to attest to how effective it is. Coppell Middle School East are the test case here and they share their story and show the reader how change happened. So if you needed proof, Assessment 3.0 provides it.

As a person who has started on this journey as well, I strongly recommend Mark Barnes' book. It's easy to read and follow and provides the solutions to revolutionize the current educational system.

Barnes helps teachers inspire student learning

Having been introduced to the idea of throwing out grades - or, as I prefer to think of it, trading grades for productive feedback - in the fall of last year, I spent the rest of the year in a tailspin. At least that's how I think of it; it seemed I was chasing my tail. Mandated by my administration to provide two grades per week, I struggled with what I was beginning to understand (why did it take so long? and why do so many others not see it?), why would we grade all that practice, all that learning process, and factor it in right along with the unit test and the final? Doesn't it matter more that they finally did "get it"? No wonder so many kids fall into one of three categories, as I see it: rebellious, apathetic or compliant. There are a few outliers who learn in spite of how they are traditionally schooled. I implemented as many things as I could: I provided feedback and several chances to get an assignment in the best shape possible (lots of back-to-the-drawing board) before a grade was put on it, and a few times, the student and I decided the grade together. I had students self-assess in many areas, reflecting and providing evidence of their work to justify. I definitely threw out zeros. I learned a lot. I looked forward to the time summer vacation would grant me so that I could read Assessment 3.0 and realign my protocols. Mark Barnes provides many stories of his own students and those of other teachers who have decided that feedback is more important and more helpful than a letter label. He explains in simple terms why grades and GPAs don't work, why they are not reliable, and he describes a better way. It's not easy and he doesn't pretend that it is, but he provides scaffolding to demonstrate a good balance of feedback, what it should look like and how it has a positive effect in the classroom and individually. Transformed my classroom!

As a teacher who spent long hours avoiding grading because it seemed to never quite meet the needs of my students or myself, I loved this book! I would spend hours laboring over comments only to find them in garbage at the end of class. Eventually I stopped writing comments because the kids weren't reading them. When students would ask me "if their project was done" I would reply with, "I don't know, is it done?" They'd respond with, "well is it an A?" I was frustrated! Students weren't concerned with making work that satisfied or enriched themselves, but rather doing the least amount of work to reach the letter they wanted. I knew that there had to be a better way, and Role Reversal by Barnes gave me the initial inspiration I needed to change. I transformed my classroom this year and switched to a system hinged on written feedback that no longer used the traditional points based system. Reading Assessment 3.0 arrived half way through the year and was a great resource to reassess strategies and implement further improvements to my classroom. Instead of project rubrics ending up in the trash, I have students who read their feedback and actually come up and thank me! Students have taken much more ownership of their work and their responsibility to the class - they are quick to help one another - especially when I am busy assisting other students.

About the Author
Deanne A. Crone, PhD, is Research Associate at the Center on Teaching and Learning at the University of Oregon. She has directed several research and training grants that address behavior disorders, positive behavior support, and functional behavioral assessment. Dr. Crone has presented her work on function-based support locally, regionally, and nationally, and has conducted workshops with a variety of professionals, including school psychologists, administrators, teachers, and paraprofessionals. With Leanne S. Hawken and Robert H. Horner, she is coauthor of Responding to Problem Behavior in Schools, Second Edition.

Leanne S. Hawken, PhD, BCBA, is Professor in the Department of Special Education at the University of Utah. She is a recipient of the College of Education Research Award from the University of Utah. Her research focuses on positive behavior support, including schoolwide behavior support, targeted interventions for students at risk, and functional assessment/behavior support planning for students engaging in severe problem behavior. She frequently leads presentations and workshops on Check-In, Check-Out and positive behavior interventions and supports. In addition to over 20 book chapters and journal articles, she is coauthor of Building Positive Behavior Support Systems in Schools, Second Edition; Responding to Problem Behavior in Schools, Second Edition; and the training DVD Check-In, Check-Out, Second Edition: A Tier 2 Intervention for Students at Risk. 
 
Robert H. Horner, PhD, is Professor of Special Education at the University of Oregon and Director of Educational Community Supports, a research unit within the College of Education that develops and implements practices resulting in positive, durable, and scientifically validated change in the lives of individuals with disabilities and their families. Dr. ­Horner’s 35-year history of research has focused on applied behavior analysis, stimulus control, instructional technology, positive behavior support, and large-scale system change.

About the Author
Roy Wilson is a past member of the Editorial Board of The Society for Modeling & Simulation International Newsletter and a former peer reviewer for the Journal of Artificial Societies and Social Simulation. Between 2001 and 2010, he published conference and peer-reviewed journal papers related to simulation, small groups, and education. From 2001 through 2006, he worked on several projects (one funded by the National Science Foundation) at the Learning Research and Development Center of the University of Pittsburgh. In 2005, the Social and Comparative Analysis in Education program at the University of Pittsburgh awarded him the Ph.D. degree with a minor in Quantitative Research Methodology. In the 1990s, he taught several courses in the history of computing at Carnegie Mellon University while earning a Master’s degree in History and Policy. In the 1980s, Roy earned a Master’s degree in Humanities from the University of Colorado and a Master’s degree in Computer Science from the University of Denver (Colorado). After a period as a consultant to several small insurance businesses, he worked as an applied mathematician on several national intelligence programs that required employees to hold an (above) Top Secret security clearance. In the 1970s, Roy earned a Master’s degree in mathematics from the University of Denver (Colorado) and a Bachelor’s degree (majoring in both mathematics and philosophy, with a near major in history) from Metropolitan State College (now Metropolitan State University) of Denver, Colorado. He left South Denver High School in 1968 after three years, without a diploma.

Introspective and Socialy Egaging

Have you ever rolled your eyes when someone generations your senior said, "When I was your age we had to walk to school, fifteen miles, uphill, and all the way barefoot!"? It's a common theme if not one you've experienced then at least you are familiar with it. Dr. Wilson puts that culturally clichéd image to the test by comparing the yearbooks of the same Denver high school, but nigh a century apart. The graduating class of 1928 compared to 2008. This is an engaging read for any educator (or curious onlooker) who has to sit back and watch as some students reach their Alpha or Beta level potentials (as it were), and how those same students' progeny may or may not have reached similar levels due to social and economic influences.

Putting American education in a new light.

First of all, I would like to say that I enjoyed Dr. Wilson's book and highly recommend it. Throughout our lives all of us, at one time or another, look back on our school years and realize what a profound effect they had on us. For the most part we try to remember classmates, teachers, classes and (yes, of course) the glory for some.
Dr. Wilson's book put all of that in a different light, challenging us to see school and life from a much larger perspective. With personal and professional insights as an educator, he helps us understand there are greater forces involved in forming our educations, and our American society as well.
I look forward to 'mulling over' more of Dr. Wilson's works in the future.

An interesting view

A thought provoking read presenting a juxtaposition of two graduating classes from a urban high school separated by eight decades. While the information delineates in varying levels of detail the perceived impact of education upon the lives of those of the class of 1928 and the anticipated influence (hoped for ?) of those of the class of 2008 the ultimate interpretation of the role of education upon the success of the individual is left to the reader to decide.

An inner personal evaluation by the reader to some degree is a guaranty as are the memories of those long past days.

I would highly recommend and look forward to the follow up edition.

The journey of trials of dissapointments, pain and rejection often time leave one to waiver their christian relationship. Having read this book have shine the light on the darken journey many experience while being processed to the discovery of one's destiny. I have never seen such revelation explained with such alignment with the word of God. I have read the story of Ruth and Naomi journey and often come away with the loyalty of Ruth and her determination to serve Naomi. However, this book has taken the revelation of this story to a different level pulling it in alignment to every day life experiences and journey of struggles each of us encounter. Wow I have definitely received hope and encouragement from this book that will allow me to stand no matter the situation, for there is hope to embrace my destiny.

Hope for Tomorrow

I read this book at a time when I knew it was time for my life to transition, yet I was confiused about how that should happen. The author uniquely used the Bible story of Ruth as well as personal stories to remind me that God is the orchestrator of my life. I felt like the book was written just for me. The way things are in today's world, I think many people will find encouragement to overcome life's difficulties and hope in God to lead them to their destiny. I certainly found that in this book.

MUST READ

I would recommend,"The Beginning of The Barley Season",to anyone wanting a deeper understanding of the seasons we go through in life as a follower of Jesus the Christ. What this book has done for me personally was provide for me a compass that helped me pin-point the season I have been in for a couple years. I believed that me not seeming to be able to move forward in life was just me being a failure and could not amount to greater things then what was familiar to me. What Joyce has taught me through her book was that there is a point that God begins to separate from you the things that are not supposed to be in our lives (toxic thinking, un-fruitful relationships, un-Godly lifestyle, etc...etc...). And in doing so after that period within that season there is a period of rest.

The way the Lord help me understand this was when someone has major surgery the doctor doesn't just send them home right away. There is a resting period. When the Lord does a spiritual, emotional, maybe even physical operation on us, He knows we need rest. Rest because we need to process and let Him strengthen and equip us for what's to come. Reading this book and understanding where I was at gave me great confidence that I shouldn't have been guilty in resting in God (also help to identify I was resting in God and not being lazy). It has been a difficult couple years with several much needed operations, but I am happy to say that God has moved me out of the prior season as the last couple days. I am so grateful for my car and new job opportunity! I know in reading this book prior to this definitely equipped me for the suddenly God has done in my life recently. Thanks Joyce for imparting your wisdom in the Lord and Godly insight you are an inspiration to me and many others. 8) Keep writing! 8)

About the Author

Dr. Mark Edwards has served as a public school superintendent for over twenty years, in Henrico County and Danville, Virginia, and since 2007 in the Mooresville Graded School District in North Carolina, where he has led a widely recognized digital conversion initiative.

 

Dr. Edwards graduated from the University of Tennessee and received his doctoral degree from Vanderbilt University. He has served as a teacher, coach, principal, and college dean and as the vice president of Harcourt Assessment. He comes from a family of educators and is a tireless advocate for public education.

 

Dr. Edwards was named Virginia Superintendent of the Year in 2001, North Carolina Superintendent of the Year in 2012, and AASA National Superintendent of the Year in 2013. He has also been recognized as the 1998 Virginia Superintendent of the Year by the Virginia Library Association, the 2000 Virginia Superintendent of the Year by the Virginia Music Association, and the 2014 North Carolina Superintendent of the Year by the North Carolina Art Association. Other awards include the 2003 Harold McGraw Prize in Education, the 2014 North Carolina Forum Jay Robinson Leadership award, and the 2014 North Carolina Order of the Long Leaf Pine.

 

Dr. Edwards currently serves as the chairman of the League of Innovative Schools advisory board and as president of the North Carolina Superintendents’ Association. He is considered an expert on North Carolina antique art pottery, loves cheering on his son Luke’s sports teams, and is an enthusiastic fan of music of all kinds.

I love it. The book provides meaningful examples of distributed leadership and the importance of focus, accountability and passion. The message throughout highlights a culture of teamwork and "lead with me" All stakeholders are "joined at the hip" in support of teaching and learning process.

MGSD is guided by the belief of “Every Child, Every Day." They have a long, outstanding history of service that is a living testament to a strong commitment to children and families. They continue to make student achievement history with at least 90% of their students demonstrating proficiency as measured by state assessments. They accomplish this goal with outstanding leadership, hard work and heart work.
