Assessment 3.0 is an essential read to make change in education

Eagerly I was waiting for my copy of Assessment 3.0: Throw Out Your Grade Book and Inspire Learning to arrive. Mark Barnes has been posting teasers for month and given my work with him with Teachers Throwing out Grades, I was desperate to see the final product.
And as per usual, he did not disappoint.
In this short book, Barnes outlines the problem with the current educational system and makes a suggestion for a simple solution: instead of trying to quantify that which is can't be realistically made into numbers and percentages without doing children an injustice, why don't we just get rid of grades.
Through his own narrative voice and research, Barnes walks the reader through his own evolution, outlining the challenges of the traditional system and the attitude keeping things as they are because they have been this way for so long.
Admittedly, this is not the reason to maintain the status quo.
Taking every argument a proponent for the current system might have like the need for GPAs or the use of simple tabulation for grades, Barnes provides reasons for why these things aren't necessary and hurt kids, quite convincingly I may add.
Each chapter sets the reader with intriguing information and then ends with questions to ponder our own barriers for making these kinds of change.
Although giving up grades is a simple solution, implementation isn't as easy. But Barnes does provide a framework for change. Since "grades lie," we need to do something different. Proposed in Barnes' earlier work Role Reversal "SE2R" - a formula for change is reintroduced here.
What is SE2R?
It's a conversation between teacher and student about learning:
S: summarize
E: explain
R: redirect
R: resubmit
I don't want to give too much away, but Barnes goes into depth with this process and explains how using it diminishes subjectivity when assessing students' work.
What a book like this also needs (and has) are some folks who are doing the work and have evidence to attest to how effective it is. Coppell Middle School East are the test case here and they share their story and show the reader how change happened. So if you needed proof, Assessment 3.0 provides it.
As a person who has started on this journey as well, I strongly recommend Mark Barnes' book. It's easy to read and follow and provides the solutions to revolutionize the current educational system.

Barnes helps teachers inspire student learning

Having been introduced to the idea of throwing out grades - or, as I prefer to think of it, trading grades for productive feedback - in the fall of last year, I spent the rest of the year in a tailspin. At least that's how I think of it; it seemed I was chasing my tail. Mandated by my administration to provide two grades per week, I struggled with what I was beginning to understand (why did it take so long? and why do so many others not see it?), why would we grade all that practice, all that learning process, and factor it in right along with the unit test and the final? Doesn't it matter more that they finally did "get it"? No wonder so many kids fall into one of three categories, as I see it: rebellious, apathetic or compliant. There are a few outliers who learn in spite of how they are traditionally schooled. I implemented as many things as I could: I provided feedback and several chances to get an assignment in the best shape possible (lots of back-to-the-drawing board) before a grade was put on it, and a few times, the student and I decided the grade together. I had students self-assess in many areas, reflecting and providing evidence of their work to justify. I definitely threw out zeros. I learned a lot. I looked forward to the time summer vacation would grant me so that I could read Assessment 3.0 and realign my protocols. Mark Barnes provides many stories of his own students and those of other teachers who have decided that feedback is more important and more helpful than a letter label. He explains in simple terms why grades and GPAs don't work, why they are not reliable, and he describes a better way. It's not easy and he doesn't pretend that it is, but he provides scaffolding to demonstrate a good balance of feedback, what it should look like and how it has a positive effect in the classroom and individually. Many examples map out how to make the changes each teacher feels comfortable making, how to communicate with the students, parents, administration and other teachers. I also know that Barnes is willing to continue the conversation on the TTOG Facebook page. Be part of the movement. Transformed my classroom!

As a teacher who spent long hours avoiding grading because it seemed to never quite meet the needs of my students or myself, I loved this book! I would spend hours laboring over comments only to find them in garbage at the end of class. Eventually I stopped writing comments because the kids weren't reading them. When students would ask me "if their project was done" I would reply with, "I don't know, is it done?" They'd respond with, "well is it an A?" I was frustrated! Students weren't concerned with making work that satisfied or enriched themselves, but rather doing the least amount of work to reach the letter they wanted. I knew that there had to be a better way, and Role Reversal by Barnes gave me the initial inspiration I needed to change. I transformed my classroom this year and switched to a system hinged on written feedback that no longer used the traditional points based system. Reading Assessment 3.0 arrived half way through the year and was a great resource to reassess strategies and implement further improvements to my classroom. Instead of project rubrics ending up in the trash, I have students who read their feedback and actually come up and thank me! Students have taken much more ownership of their work and their responsibility to the class - they are quick to help one another - especially when I am busy assisting other students.
