Excellent Resource for Those Who Wish to Establish Student-Centered Classrooms

Kelly Gallagher is among the very best voices in education today. I own all of his books, and if you follow Gallagher's writing as I do, his latest book will not disappoint. Gallagher highlights the strengths and weaknesses of the CCSS, and updates us on how education has shifted since he wrote Readicide. Unfortunately, little has changed in the teaching of English language arts, so there are still an abundance of classrooms where the learning is not student-centered, and teachers are not readers and writers who learn alongside their students.
Gallagher offers a wealth of writing strategies that he employs in his own classroom, as well as suggestions for how to build in more student choice in what is read, and how to balance whole class book study with other kinds of reading experiences. I appreciate that Gallagher dedicates an entire chapter to enhancing speaking and listening skills, components of language arts that are frequently neglected since they are not tested. I know that I will be referencing this book daily as I finish this school year, focusing on what is in the best interest of my students, rather than on the latest standards based mania.

When I was student teaching at CSUF, my fellow teachers and I the opportunity to visit with Kelly in his classroom. I was inspired by the incendiary, rebelliousness of his commentary, and by the fearlessness in which he fought for the best interests of his students.

Readicide was a revelation to me as I began teaching ultra-high risk, 18-25 year old drop outs in a gang-rehab charter school. How to make gang-bangers read--and love--Romeo and Juliet? Not as hard as one might think--if we don't kill it by over-teaching it. (My students still come into my class and say "I'm biting my thumb at you!").

This book, for teachers of all disciplines struggling with applying Common Core, is infinitely helpful. For English teachers, the exhortation is to go beyond the limitations of the standards. I like that about you, Mr. Gallagher.

If You Buy No Other Book as an English teacher, Buy This!

I read this book and loved every page. Gallagher provides ways to not only teach the Common Core Standards but how to go ABOVE and BEYOND! The book is full of practical ideas that you can implement easily and immediately to encourage more writing and reading in your classroom! I immediately bought another of his books-Teaching Adolescent Writing, and it was equally as useful. Today I am going to buy a third book by Gallagher! His passion for teaching is evident throughout the book and makes me want to be a better teacher. I can't wait to implement all that I have learned from him since reading his books!
