Sage Advice and Excellent Resource

Having now lived the life of an expat for some time, I appreciate the amount of information G. James packed in to this compact book. The author’s advice is sound, the level of detail regarding teaching contracts and even US Embassy information is spot-on and the links to various resources are invaluable. While the book is specific to the author’s Korean experience, the advice and general information is applicable to virtually anywhere. The bottom line before you set foot on foreign soil is – do your homework, connect to local legal resources, research and purchase appropriate health insurance and connect to others who have gone before you and learn from them. If you follow this sage advice, you will have a much better experience and your success is all but guaranteed.

When I was looking for jobs in Korea, veteran expats always told me one thing: "Let me see your contract before you sign." If you're thinking about teaching in Korea (or anywhere abroad, really), this book will help you make the most important decision you have to make before you come: choosing a fair and decent contract. It explains how to recognize good working conditions in SK, how the hagwon system works, what your rights are, and what to do when things go wrong (as they are likely to at least once). This book is a must-read for prospective esl teachers!

easy, and informative read

This a compact, easy, and informative read. It felt like a really informed friend guiding me in the right directions- and I now know a lot of things to be on the lookout for that I haven't been informed of from any other source. G. James isn't afraid of the nitty gritty, it seems, and though I've done a lot of online research about teaching in Korea, this is the most honest and straightforward resource I've come across. The sample contracts where an awesome addition. Anyone coming to Korea to teach English should read this book!
